Technological University Dublin Leads Age-Friendly AI Education in Ireland
Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) is spearheading a national initiative to promote AI literacy among older adults in Ireland. In partnership with the ADAPT Centre, this two-year program, funded by Research Ireland, aims to bridge the knowledge gap and ensure that older adults have a voice in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
Addressing AI Concerns and Fostering Inclusivity
The Age-Friendly AI initiative recognizes that the rapid advancement of AI can be both exciting and concerning, particularly for older adults who may feel excluded from these technological changes. Through a series of workshops, online resources, and a nationwide postcard campaign, the program seeks to engage an estimated 60,000 older adults in meaningful conversations about AI.
These discussions address common concerns surrounding AI, such as misinformation, privacy, and security. By providing a platform for older adults to share their perspectives, TU Dublin aims to foster inclusivity and ensure that AI development considers the needs and concerns of all members of society. Pilot workshops conducted with Age Action U3A groups have already demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach, with participants reporting a significant increase in their understanding of AI and a reduction in their concerns.
Empowering Older Adults Through AI Literacy
A core component of the Age-Friendly AI initiative is the provision of tailored AI literacy training to 1,200 older adults. This training, developed in collaboration with industry partners, policymakers, and community groups like Age Action and Age Friendly Ireland, will empower older adults to engage confidently with AI-driven technology.
Interactive workshops and co-creation sessions will ensure that the learning materials are relevant and meet the unique needs of older learners. Ambassadors from TU Dublin’s Digital Futures Research Hub, ADAPT, and Insight research centers will facilitate the training, ensuring nationwide reach and impact.
Shaping the Future of AI Together
TU Dublin’s Age-Friendly AI initiative is more than just an educational program; it’s a commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable future where everyone benefits from the advancements in artificial intelligence. By actively involving older adults in the conversation, TU Dublin is ensuring that their valuable experiences and insights shape the ethical and responsible development of AI technologies.
This groundbreaking project positions TU Dublin as a leader in age-friendly AI education and highlights the importance of lifelong learning in the face of rapid technological change. As AI continues to transform society, TU Dublin’s initiative serves as a model for how to bridge the generation gap and ensure that no one is left behind.
