From the Liberties to Lecturer: Dr. Kennedy’s Educational Journey
Dr. Con Kennedy’s story is one of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education. Growing up in Dublin’s Liberties during challenging times, Dr. Kennedy’s path to becoming a Lecturer in Visual Communication Design at Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) was not a traditional one. His experiences highlight the importance of alternative pathways and the supportive environment that TU Dublin offers its students.
Early Education and Non-Traditional Path
Dr. Kennedy’s education began at St. Audeon’s National School and later at the Liberties Vocational School. Unable to pursue the traditional Leaving Certificate program, he instead completed a PLC in Ballyfermot. This decision proved pivotal, opening doors to a BA (Hons) in Design (Visual Communication) at the College of Marketing and Design, which later became part of TU Dublin. A recipient of the prestigious Guinness Scholarship (now the Finbarr Flood Scholarship), he became the first in his school to attend university, a testament to his hard work and the opportunities provided by further education.
Professional Experience and Return to Academia
Following his undergraduate studies, Dr. Kennedy embarked on a successful 14-year career in the design industry. Working for leading Irish creative agencies, he honed his skills and collaborated with high-profile clients. However, the allure of academia eventually led him back to TU Dublin. He pursued an MA in Professional Design Practice, further enriching his expertise and sparking his entrepreneurial spirit. This led him to establish his own business and begin lecturing part-time.
A PhD Journey and Commitment to Community
Dr. Kennedy’s commitment to lifelong learning culminated in a PhD in Marketing and Entrepreneurship from TU Dublin in 2015. This achievement, perhaps unimaginable in his youth, led to a full-time lecturing position at the university in 2017. Deeply connected to his Liberties roots, Dr. Kennedy also serves on the Board of Advisors for the Liberties festival, demonstrating his dedication to his community.
