Overview of the Historic Visit
On 2 December 2025, Trinity College Dublin hosted Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska, marking the first official visit by a Ukrainian head‑of‑state to Ireland. The event underscored the university’s commitment to fostering international dialogue and highlighted the deep cultural ties between Ireland and Ukraine.

Book of Kells Presentation
Dr Linda Doyle, Provost of Trinity, presented the First Lady with a copy of the Book of Kells, Ireland’s most celebrated illuminated manuscript. The gesture symbolised the shared heritage of manuscript culture and the enduring value of preserving historical texts.
Exploration of Trinity’s Historic Collections
Olena Zelenska toured the Old Library’s Long Room, where she examined a rare copy of the 1916 Proclamation of the Republic and the Brian Boru harp, the oldest surviving harp in Ireland. These artifacts served as a backdrop for discussions on national identity and cultural resilience.
Academic and Diplomatic Engagements
During her stay, the First Lady met with Vice‑Provost/CAO Professor Orla Sheils and was escorted by Anne Marie Diffley, Visitor Services Manager, and Jessie Kurtz, Deputy Librarian and Head of Readers’ Services. She also signed the Visitors’ Book alongside Mary Martin, wife of Taoiseach Micheál Martin, TD.
Strengthening Academic Partnerships
Trinity College Dublin has long maintained robust academic links with Ukrainian institutions. The university currently hosts 136 Ukrainian students, including 111 undergraduates and 25 postgraduates. Through Erasmus+ agreements, Trinity collaborates with Zaporizhzhia National University and the Ukrainian Catholic University on projects that will facilitate the mobility of 17 incoming students and 15 staff members between 2024 and 2027.
Ukrainian Studies at Trinity
The Department of Russian and Slavonic Studies offers a range of courses focused on Ukraine, such as evening Ukrainian language classes and the “Introduction to Contemporary Ukraine” module. The “Introduction to Central, East European and Russian Area Studies” module also features a lecture on Ukraine. In 2022/2023, the department hosted seven public lectures on Ukrainian history and culture, attracting scholars and students from across the globe.
