TU Dublin Hosts Community Film Screening on Immigration and Culture

TU Dublin recently welcomed the Phibsboro Film Society and Phibsboro for All to its Grangegorman campus for a thought-provoking film screening and community discussion. The event, held as part of the university’s ongoing commitment to community engagement and cultural dialogue, featured the 2007 American drama film The Visitor, written and directed by Tom McCarthy.

A Film That Sparks Conversation

The screening drew a large and diverse audience, including local residents, TU Dublin staff, and students. The Visitor tells the story of Walter Vale, a lonely economics professor whose life is transformed after a chance encounter with an immigrant couple living in his New York apartment. The film explores themes of identity, connection, and the complexities of immigration in contemporary America.

Following the screening, attendees participated in a panel discussion on immigration and asylum, led by Ken McCue, Cultural Planner and member of the Phibsboro Film Society, and Lucky Khambule from the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland. The discussion provided a platform for meaningful dialogue about the experiences of immigrants and asylum seekers, both in Ireland and globally.

Cultural Exchange Through Music

As part of the film’s subplot, Tarek, a Palestinian-Syrian musician, teaches Walter how to play the djembe, a rope-tuned drum originating from West Africa. To bring this element of the film to life, the audience enjoyed a live djembe performance by Nico Severin, a Chilean-Irish musician based in Dublin. The performance added a vibrant cultural dimension to the event, highlighting the power of music to connect people across different backgrounds.

Upcoming Community Events at TU Dublin

The success of this event underscores TU Dublin’s role as a hub for community engagement and cultural exchange. The next film screening is scheduled for 14 April 2026, and will continue the tradition of combining film with meaningful discussion. In the days leading up to the screening, an information table for students will be set up in the Quads to provide details and encourage participation.
