Griffith College Honors Rachael Blackmore with Professional Excellence Award
Celebrating a National Champion: Rachael Blackmore’s Award at Griffith College
On 5 November 2025, the Dublin campus of Griffith College hosted a momentous ceremony that highlighted the intersection of sporting excellence and academic recognition. Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Rachael Blackmore was presented with the college’s prestigious Professional Excellence Award, a testament to her impact on Irish sport and her embodiment of the values Griffith College seeks to promote in its community.
What Is the Professional Excellence Award?
The Professional Excellence Award is an annual accolade bestowed by Griffith College to individuals who have made significant contributions to professional development and education on a national scale. Past recipients include figures such as Data Protection Commissioner Helen Dixon, journalist and entrepreneur Mark Little, and GAA commentator Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh. The award underscores the college’s commitment to celebrating leaders who inspire both current students and the broader public.
Criteria and Selection Process
Candidates are evaluated based on:
- Impact on their field and on Irish society.
- Demonstrated leadership and mentorship.
- Alignment with Griffith College’s values of integrity, innovation, and community engagement.
Rachael Blackmore’s record—winning the Grand National, Cheltenham Gold Cup, and earning the title of leading jockey at the Cheltenham Festival—meets and exceeds these criteria, making her a natural choice for the award.
Why Rachael Blackmore Matters to Students and Alumni
Blackmore’s journey offers concrete lessons for anyone pursuing excellence, whether in sports, business, or academia:
- Resilience in the Face of Adversity – Overcoming early setbacks in a male‑dominated sport, she demonstrates that perseverance can break barriers.
- Strategic Goal‑Setting – Her meticulous preparation for each race mirrors the disciplined study habits students apply to their coursework.
- Community Engagement – Blackmore’s involvement in charitable initiatives shows how success can be leveraged to give back, a principle Griffith College encourages through its outreach programs.
For alumni, seeing a fellow Irish athlete receive such recognition reinforces the network’s strength and the potential for future collaborations.
How to Leverage This Inspiration in Your Own Path
Whether you’re a prospective student, a current learner, or a professional looking to elevate your career, the award ceremony offers actionable takeaways:
- Set clear, measurable goals and review them regularly.
- Seek mentors who have navigated similar challenges.
- Balance specialization with a broad skill set—Blackmore’s success was built on both technical riding skills and a deep understanding of horse behaviour.
- Engage with community projects to broaden your impact and network.
Griffith College’s curriculum, especially in the fields of Sports Management, Business, and Media Studies, is designed to support these strategies.
